EOC Week 4: Role of Women in Contemporary Advertisements

For this ad I decided to switch it up a bit. I chose an ad that uses a woman in a negative way rather than a positive. Back than this wasn’t made to be offensive to a woman because in those days a women’s job was to stay home with the kids and take care of their husband. But now its completely different, looking back at this ad it shows that a normal woman cannot open a ketchup bottle? Showing as if a woman isn’t strong enough and cannot do something that only a man could.  In this ad it says, “You mean a woman can open it?” I laugh because back then they made woman look so weak compared to nowadays.

EOC Week 4: Role of Women in Contemporary Advertisements

I love this Dove commercial because it demonstrates a strong message. On the ad it says, “As tested on real curves”; meaning they woman in this ad looks as if they got them from a normal day. I say that because all the models on every commercial or ad looks like their models, which they are. But normal people cannot relate to the product because they don’t have the same body type as that certain model. In this ad it changes it up; they use fuller women to demonstrate the use of the body wash. Showing if you’re just a normal person looking for a great product this is the one for you.

EOC Week 4: Role of Women in Contemporary Advertisements

This iconic woman was demonstrating the strength a woman has to have. This was created during WWII so women had to work outside of their homes while their husband was at war. It was also made to think that woman could do non-glamorous things than just being a stay at home wife, or even a office working woman. They were trying to make a normal woman to be acceptable in the work place. Constantly asking women to rethink their place in society back in those times. “Rosie” the women in this image is basically saying its okay for a woman to work in a less glamorous area of war production.

Tobacco Advertisement

      1. Determine the scenario: What happens in this frame?
It is a vintage tobacco advertisement with president Ronald Reagan signing boxes of Chesterfield Cigarettes. The context of the ad says “I’m sending Chesterfields to all my friends. That’s the merriest Christmas any smoker can have- Chesterfield mildness plus no unpleasant after taste.”

         2. What is the setting? What are the conditions?
Ronald Reagan casually smiles and calmly sits while signing Chesterfield Cigarettes.  It is a Christmas theme; so he signs boxes to send to his friends on as a Christmas gift.

         3. Who are the people or groups?
The only person in this advertisement is president Ronald Reagan.

         4. What is their point of view around this specific experience?
It is basically saying if a president approves of this certain type of cigarette than anyone should.  Also they made a Christmas card themed carton, which makes it more appealing to buy and look at.

         5. What are their goals?
To make it seem that smoking is not such a bad thing if the president of a country is doing it. Trying to persuade people into buying them.

         6. What are their assumptions? What are their perceptions?
If president Reagan is smoking and enjoying them; everyone should. Everyday people can smoke the same exact cigarettes that the president of the United States is.

         7. Are there conflicts? Is there cooperation?
I think some conflicts might be that everyone may dislike the president, so in that case some of the sales might decline because of this. If they don’t like President Reagan then they wouldn’t buy the cigarettes that he is advertising.

         8. What are the outcomes?

Trying to persuade everyone should gift this “Christmas-card carton”. Making the carton a certain theme makes the viewer seem like its more appealing to the average smoker.
