Tobacco Advertisement

      1. Determine the scenario: What happens in this frame?
It is a vintage tobacco advertisement with president Ronald Reagan signing boxes of Chesterfield Cigarettes. The context of the ad says “I’m sending Chesterfields to all my friends. That’s the merriest Christmas any smoker can have- Chesterfield mildness plus no unpleasant after taste.”

         2. What is the setting? What are the conditions?
Ronald Reagan casually smiles and calmly sits while signing Chesterfield Cigarettes.  It is a Christmas theme; so he signs boxes to send to his friends on as a Christmas gift.

         3. Who are the people or groups?
The only person in this advertisement is president Ronald Reagan.

         4. What is their point of view around this specific experience?
It is basically saying if a president approves of this certain type of cigarette than anyone should.  Also they made a Christmas card themed carton, which makes it more appealing to buy and look at.

         5. What are their goals?
To make it seem that smoking is not such a bad thing if the president of a country is doing it. Trying to persuade people into buying them.

         6. What are their assumptions? What are their perceptions?
If president Reagan is smoking and enjoying them; everyone should. Everyday people can smoke the same exact cigarettes that the president of the United States is.

         7. Are there conflicts? Is there cooperation?
I think some conflicts might be that everyone may dislike the president, so in that case some of the sales might decline because of this. If they don’t like President Reagan then they wouldn’t buy the cigarettes that he is advertising.

         8. What are the outcomes?

Trying to persuade everyone should gift this “Christmas-card carton”. Making the carton a certain theme makes the viewer seem like its more appealing to the average smoker.
